Project Eye Care

Project Eye Care served 765 clients in 2009 and 2010.

This program obtains comprehensive eye exams and glasses for individuals and families who are financially restricted and either uninsured or under-insured. We determine financial and medical need through an application process.

Are you eligible?

To be accepted for Project Eye Care services, you must meet all of the following criteria.

  • You or your family are low-income according to income guidelines issued by HUD (the Department of Housing and Urban Development) for Rhode Island.
  • You are a documented U.S. citizen.
  • You do not have eye care insurance through an HMO, Medicaid, Medicare or the Veteran’s Administration (VA), or your insurance does not cover the cost of prescription glasses.
  • You have not seen an eye care professional in three or more years, or you have a documented medical condition that has an immediate effect on your vision.
  • You have not received vision services free or on a sliding scale within the past three years.
  • How to apply

    1. Complete both pages of the application, and return it to Saving Sight Rhode Island, 982 West Shore Road, Warwick, RI 02889 with a $30.00 application fee.
    2. With your application include copies of your identification and your proof of income. A photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state issued identification card, or passport are acceptable as identification.
  • Please do not consider your application approved until you are contacted by Saving Sight Rhode Island.

Restrictions

This program does not provide the following types of eyewear:

  • Progressive bifocals or trifocals, tinted lenses, transitional eyewear, contact lenses, or any other cosmetic or optional products that are not absolutely necessary to correct your vision.
  • Reading glasses that can be purchased over the counter at local pharmacies, “dollar stores,” and outlet stores for a small fee.
